Q: Why Workbench crashes constantly with the message “A fatal error has occurred within AnsysWBU.exe and it must be closed…”? User is running ANSYS 2020R2 and 2021 R1. This is due to the desktop environment they use which is iceWM. They tried to use gnome but that also failed. They were told to use KDE; however the problem is KDE (a very heavy and robust interface as compared to IceWM and even Gnome) is no longer supported by SUSE (not included at all in any SLES 12 release), so this would involve engineering and admin time to download and compile/install KDE and all its many pieces and then work through all the KDE configuration items and fallout issues and reiterate until all the pieces are working, followed up by potentially a lot of troubleshooting and more configuration. Even if you pull down the 120+ packages from the user supported Package Hub, if there are issues then you may still need to resort in part or in full to the compile from source option. They don’t purchase the SLED interface from SUSE as an add-on (which is the full Gnome interface), we only work with what’s delivered within an Enterprise Server release, which is Gnome (not the full-fledged version) and IceWM. Why one of the SUSE supported environments are not the focus for ANSYS, rather than the user-supported KDE interface which hasn’t gone through the rigorous integration testing by SUSE.

Solution
ParticipantA: Developer has worked with MainWin and created a patch that allows ANSYS 2020 R2 and ANSYS 2021 R1 to work with iceWmM on SUSE 12 (Find pacth attached) Customer should replace the current files in /ansys_inc/v202/commonfiles/MainWin/linx64/mw/lib-amd64_linux_optimized/ They should not need to run with MWWM System Variable. This seems to fix the selection issue for a specific customer when using IceWM.
