Is Normal Lagrange (NL) contact better than Augmented Lagrange (AL) / Pure Penalty (PP) approach?

The Normal Lagrange contact formulation, unlike penalty methods, does not use the contact stiffness for calculating contact forces. This formulation enforces a stronger constraint on contact penetration compared to the penalty methods. Therefore, it may be useful in applications where element penetration is to be mitigated. Also, it is preferred over penalty methods for line-surface and point-line/surface contacts. However, the Normal Lagrange method requires use of the direct sparse solver.
